These thieves often make threatening or alarming calls posing as the IRS to try to steal taxpayer money or personal information.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s easy for people to recognize this scam by knowing how the IRS contacts taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The IRS will never<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes. Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.<\/li>\n<li>Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.<\/li>\n<li>Call unexpectedly about a tax refund.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Taxpayers who receive these phone calls should<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Record the number and then hang up the phone immediately.<\/li>\n<li>Report the call by visiting the Hotline page of Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and using an IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting form or by calling<a href=\"tel:800-366-4484\"> 800-366-4484<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Forms to report fraud are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMjcsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMzAxMDkuNjk0Mzk5OTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy50aWd0YS5nb3YvcmVwb3J0Y3JpbWUtbWlzY29uZHVjdCJ9.YrjUICXKAFFRIAaQVyMw56iJUs95NFGex_yCFdwPyg4\/s\/350531660\/br\/151942435308-l\">Hotline page of Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration website<\/a>.
