Some people with low income are not required to file, but will need to do so if they can get a tax refund. Here are five tips for taxpayers who are deciding whether to file a tax return:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Find out the general reasons to file<\/strong><br \/>\nIn most cases, income, filing status and age determine if a taxpayer must file a tax return. Other rules may apply if the taxpayer is self-employed or can be claimed as a dependent of someone else. There are other reasons when a taxpayer must file. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMjgsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMDAxMTMuMTU0MDMwMDEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5pcnMuZ292L2hlbHAvaXRhL2RvLWktbmVlZC10by1maWxlLWEtdGF4LXJldHVybiJ9.OqKI6Yy-iuCa3RWJAWH6477rNiUtE5LVwgY_SDy4oU4\/br\/73915761722-l\">Interactive Tax Assistant<\/a> can help someone determine if they the need to file a return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look at tax withheld or paid<\/strong><br \/>\nHere are a few questions for taxpayers to ask themselves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did the taxpayer\u2019s employer withhold federal income tax from their pay?<\/li>\n<li>Did the taxpayer make estimated tax payments?<\/li>\n<li>Did they overpay last year and have it applied to this year\u2019s tax?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the answer is \u201cyes\u201d to any of these questions, they could be due a refund. They must file a tax return to get their money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look into whether they can claim the earned income tax credit<\/strong><br \/>\nA working taxpayer who earned less than $55,592 last year could receive the EITC as a tax refund. They must qualify and may do so with or without a qualifying child.
