Why do I need an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a 9-digit number the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues to people filing a tax return who are not U.S. citizens and who do not have or are not eligible for a Social Security number. You can only use your ITIN for tax reporting purposes.

Can I get an ITIN if I don’t live in the US?

If applying outside the United States, see Obtaining an ITIN from abroad for more information. If you apply in person, the IRS will review your documents and return them to you immediately. Applicants may also submit their applications by using the services of an Acceptance Agent.

How does a non-US citizen get a tax ID number?

To obtain an ITIN, you must complete IRS Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and true identity for each individual.

Can I file a US tax return without an ITIN?

A tax return that includes an individual lacking either an SSN or an ITIN must include Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for that individual, and the return plus Form W-7 will be paper filed to the appropriate IRS Service Center

What website can I use to verify my tin number?

Accessible at verify.philsys.gov.ph through internet browsers on smartphones, tablets, and computers, such as desktops or laptops. It is classified as an offline authentication method under Section 12 of the revised Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act (RA) No. 11055.
