Remember that the earned income and pensions for all current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces are Tax exempt from your Spanish and Portuguese Tax return. However, if you have spent more than 183 days in Spain or Portugal, you will be considered a “fiscal resident” of these countries, and you must also file a tax return in these countries first if your non-exempt income is over the threshold, €22,000 (2024) if only one payer or €15,876 (2024) if it comes from two or more payers.

Fortunately for our armed forces, most military installations offer tax support venues to help service members and their families. Now there is one in Rota.

Tax Bracket Rates for this year

These brackets are adjusted annually for inflation. For more detailed information, you can refer to the IRS’s official publication on federal income tax rates and brackets. The U.S. has a progressive, or graduated, tax system, so income isn’t taxed a flat rate. Instead, it’s taxed at differing rates — 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. If you need assistance determining your effective tax rate or have questions about deductions and credits, feel free to ask us!

Federal tax brackets saw a 5.4% rise from 2023, meaning that taxpayers whose salaries have not kept pace with inflation may be able to shield more of their income from higher federal tax brackets in 2024.

For all 2024 tax brackets and all filers, the income limits will be adjusted for inflation as follows:

Tax Rate Single Filers Married Filing Jointly Heads of Households
10% $0 to $11,600 $0 to $23,200 $0 to $16,550
12% $11,600 to $47,150 $23,200 to $94,300 $16,550 to $63,100
22% $47,150 to $100,525 $94,300 to $201,050 $63,100 to $100,500
24% $100,525 to $191,950 $201,050 to $383,900 $100,500 to $191,950
32% $191,950 to $243,725 $383,900 to $487,450 $191,950 to $243,700
35% $243,725 to $609,350 $487,450 to $731,200 $243,700 to $609,350

Do I really need a professional Tax Preparer?

Tax preparers need an active PTIN to file tax returns on behalf of their clients. PTINs identify these professionals to the IRS and protect them from fraud.

A professional tax preparer can save you time and money, can answer your questions and resolve issues. The tax code is complicated: Professional tax preparers keep up with the yearly changes. With a professional tax preparer, you gain peace of mind, as mistakes can be costly. What’s more, working with a professional reduces the risk of an audit, not to mention that a professional tax preparer takes the burden off your doing your taxes yourself.
