Spain’s tax season begins on April 8.

Now that we are already in 2026, many people are undoubtedly thinking about the upcoming Personal Income Tax campaign. This year, however, it will come with a calendar that differs from the usual one, which the Tax Agency has already officially confirmed. It’s important to understand these changes, as the 2026 IRPF campaign will start later than expected. The reason is directly related to the timing of Holy Week, which forces a modification of key dates and pushes back the opening of the online filing period.

As many taxpayers know, every year the campaign begins with Renta Web, the system millions of people use to review their tax data and submit their return from home. However, in 2026, Renta Web cannot be activated on its traditional dates because they fall on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Faced with this overlap, the Tax Agency has had to adjust the entire schedule to prevent the official launch from coinciding with national holidays. This delay in the first phase means that the overall campaign period will be shorter than in previous years. In fact, the campaign loses six days compared to last year, forcing a reorganization of appointments, deadlines, and services. Even so, the general structure remains similar, with telephone and in‑person assistance on dates close to those of previous years.

The main change has already been confirmed: The 2026 IRPF campaign for filing tax returns online will begin on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, six days later than usual. This is not an arbitrary delay. The explanation lies in the calendar: Holy Thursday falls on April 2 and Good Friday on April 3 — precisely the dates on which Renta Web typically opens each year. Therefore, due to Holy Week, this year we will simply have to wait a little longer before the campaign begins, and once it does open, avoid losing time.

The Tax Agency’s online portal will be accessible from that date for all taxpayers who want to get started as early as possible. As always, online filing will be available every day of the month and at any time. Despite the reduced number of days, the agency insists that online filing remains the most flexible and convenient method. With this adjustment, the 2026 campaign officially begins in the second week of April. All subsequent procedures have been shifted accordingly, although the overall sequence remains unchanged from previous years.

Regarding in‑person assistance, the 2026 campaign introduces a small change from the previous year. In‑office appointments will begin on June 1, one day earlier than in the last campaign. As usual, an appointment will be required, and it can be requested starting May 29.

The Tax Agency also maintains the unchanged deadline for filing returns with amounts due when the taxpayer wishes to use direct debit. That deadline will be June 25, 2026. Taxpayers filing after that date will need to choose other payment methods, as long as they are still within the general campaign period.
